Hello Frank,
I had an opportunity to review some of your podcast episodes, including #25. Thank you for sharing those Orkin statistics.
Our company, Hearts Pest Management, is moving toward the commercial side as a natural continuation of our increased strength in the region. We are seeing larger opportunities coming our way. Perhaps the incidence of bed bugs is forcing the commercial market upward.
I believe that both commercial and residential markets are dropping in equal measure. After all, which came first, the chicken or the egg, empty pockets among consumers or companies with empty pockets laying off workers. Clearly both are happening, probably in equal measure. During the winter, we heard of many business and individual bankruptcies… oh, and by the way, we also had many bank robberies!
Though 87 percent of respondents said they would keep – a – pest control service, my question would then be – which one? I’ve always noticed that customers have shorter tempers in the heat of summer. What we also see is that customers now have shorter tempers with pest control companies due to the economy. There is more switching going on as customers demand more… sometimes for less, while companies operate under greater strain.
Also, if 87 percent of respondents said they’d keep their pest control service, how do you explain companies that are losing 50% of their accounts? There is more happening here than just the economy!
On a completely different subject, I compliment you on a very positive, and professional commentary in episode #22 on the Obama administration. So many conservatives are bashing Obama for his spending policies. You did a great job of stating, without specific intent to correct those who call Obama a socialist, that he is actually employing classic Keynesian economics. We all have to give Obama a fighting chance to correct the problems that have not been properly addressed (credit markets, housing, banking, deregulation, deficits, and more). You made a great start in our industry with an unbiased, educated editorial.
Thanks again,
Gerry

I feel if companies are losing customers in a recession, or in the hot months, Then the tech. or the manager is not taking care of the customers. It all comes down to excellent customer service, as the money get tighter then the customers demand more, lots of times the bigger companies can not do that. That is why some of the bigger companies are losing customers and the small family owned business are striving.

I wrote an article about keeping your pest control during the recession…
