Be Careful What You Wish For

Because you just might get it. Thanks to Mike Merchant of Texas A&M for relaying the pest alert from Dan Suiter and Lisa Ames at the University of Georgia about the bean plataspid, another exotic pest that some people think is a good introduction because it takes care of another problem (in this case, the kudzu plant).

But like all well-intentioned introductions like this, it has the potential to go badly awry, as Suiter and Ames outline in their pest alert. Mike then asks relevant questions about other invasive species and our inability to combat them effectively. I liked his proposal for an alert system for structural pests patterned after the ag alert system. It’s intriguing, so check it out.

It’s stories like this, by the by, that make Insects in the City a must read blog for anyone who is serious about keeping up with the latest information on the pest side of pest management (well, along with this one and this one). Please check it out at least once a week — you won’t be sorry.
